Current Community Initiatives

Guided by our current strategic plan and statewide focuses for early childhood, PCF is engaged with multiple activities and community efforts throughout Mesa County.

Connecting with new childcare networks

There are many families who don’t currently use a licensed childcare facility and instead use what is often referred to as the family, friend and neighbor (FFN) network. PCF is currently deploying efforts to best understand how to support these families, in part by sharing information on local resources and child development.

Preparing early childhood professionals

PCF champions the development of early childhood education and care professionals, through both advocating for and providing educational opportunities. Some examples of current offerings include Child Development Associate Credential classes, Expanding Quality Infant Toddler (EQIT) courses and other topical trainings. Read more about these efforts and learn how you can take advantage of these offerings.

Increasing availability and accessibility of childcare

Mesa County has been experiencing a shortage of licensed childcare spots, and Mesa County Public Health and its partners, including PCF, are working to increase the number of available spots through the Child Care 8,000 initiative. Additionally, PCF works closely with the local Colorado Preschool Program to connect qualifying families with preschool opportunities.

Increasing quality and safety of childcare

Coaching can make all the difference when childcare providers and centers are looking to grow their staff and create better, safer environments for their children. PCF staff provides thousands of hours to local providers who are pursuing Colorado Shines quality improvement programming. Partnering with local Early Learning Ventures and Early Head Start staff, PCF contributes to a peer learning network that helps practitioners share their knowledge and practices within the childcare community. Providing up-to-date resources for children and families

Supporting the aim of preventing child abuse and neglect by supporting families, educating parents, and engaging community members, members of the PCF and How are the Children? committees developed an internet-based family resource guide. The Got Kids? Road Map provides parents and caregivers with a go-to place to learn about and find serves and resources, as well as child development information for families with young children in Mesa County.
